Sick Days

This week was a little rough.  It started out strong (though, to be honest, I was still recovering from Idaho when Monday hit) but by Tuesday night, I knew I was coming down with something.  I hunkered down Wednesday and Thursday and did the bare minimum to get by (and my house can tell you it was very, very little) and managed to keep everything at bay so nothing terrible developed.

It's hard to know when to just push through and when to lay low.  "They" say that if the symptoms are above the neck, you are fine to keep going, though you might want to dial down the intensity a bit.  I have worked out when I've been sick and sometimes I can kick it faster but other times, it lingers longer.  My go to philosophy is that if I'm training for a long endurance event, I take the days off because the workouts aren't necessarily quality workouts when you're sick.  Also, the immune system can be weakened with endurance training and it's better just to err on the side of resting.  Since it's only February and I have been very consistent with my training, I opted to take two complete days off.  It was hard.  By Thursday afternoon, I felt like I could squeeze in a bike session at a lower intensity, but opted not to.  It was probably a wise decision.

Friday, I returned full force. I ran 5 miles early and did 35 miles on the bike trainer.  Saturday, we did 10 miles on a snowy trail.  I felt pretty good, albeit a little tired.  It's hard to know whether it's because I haven't run 10 miles in a long time or if it's because I was still recovering or if it was because of the trail.

Weekly Totals
Swim: 2931 yds
Bike: 3:08 (35 mile long, 46.8 miles total)
Run: 19.5 miles

Workout of the Week
This winter has been storm after storm.  While it's been fun frolicking in the snow the last two months, I am ready to hit the trails again.  Another storm was slated for Friday night, so I mapped out a sad 10 mile route around Highland for our Saturday morning jaunt.  When we woke up though, there was just a trace of snow on the ground.  Yay!  I made the suggestion that we head up to the Bonneville Shoreline and luckily they all agreed, so off we went.

It was so much fun.  The weather was crisp but clear so we could see across the valley.  There wasn't anyone else out.  It was a good run.  I was tired from my long bike on Friday and so I felt like I was going slower, but when I compared our times to when we last ran the trail in November (with no snow!) we were faster on almost every mile!  Yay for progress.
