Recharging the Batteries

Hillary and I spent the most amazing weekend at a birthday party for a mutual friend in Northern Idaho.  Seriously, it was incredible.  Good food, good fun, good friends, zero workouts.

I really struggle with working out while I'm on vacation.  Some people love to do it and I hate it.  I like to know where I'm at and I don't want to get lost.  Plus I watch a lot of Dateline.  I know how those stories start!

But I thought, surrounded by running friends, it would be easier.  And we could have made it work seeing as we were in bed every night by 10:00 (This must be how you know you're old...you go to bed at 10 when you're partying for the weekend), but the weather was less than cooperative.  I have a line and that line is drawn well before -22* with windchill.

Thursday, we spent most of the day traveling.  Our plane left at 6:30 am and we were trying to get to Schweitzer by noon to ski, but our connecting flight in Seattle was delayed by 3 hours, so we missed our opportunity.  Coupled with a 90 minute drive to the cabin and we didn't pull in until close to 4 pm.

Friday, we went snowshoeing at the local ski resort.  It was awesome.  They had cut a path through the trees just for snowshoes.  We were with a lot of newbies and so the workout was only 4 miles long and not very fast.  They had a good time so that's all that counts.

Saturday, the winds kicked up and it was too cold to do anything.  We spent the day inside the cabin staring out the window and playing games.  I took two pair of shoes that I never even unpacked.

It has been a long time that I've gone three days without exercise.  It felt simultaneously rejuvenating and frustrating.  I realize that I need to workout.  It's become such a habit to me and I rely on the endorphins to get me through the day.  By Saturday afternoon, I was so antsy.  I needed to get out of the cabin!

It's nice to be home and to have my batteries recharged.  I'm ready to recommit to the training schedule and eating well and kicking trash--so long as the weather will allow me to!

Weekly Totals
Swim: 1200 yds
Bike: 2:40:00 (15 miles long, 37.7 miles total)
Run: 5.17 miles

Workout of the Week

I tried to condense all my workouts down into the three days before I was leaving for Idaho.  I got in all the bikes, 1 swim and 1 run.  It was a good effort though.

The one swim was *only* 1000 yards.  It's a doable distance, of course, but it can get boring.  However, a friend is taking a swim class at BYU and I've been trying to get my time down for a 700 yd swim down closer to where she is.  She tested at 14:58.  My first time, I was at 17:11 (I am SO slow at swimming).  Then I tried again the next week and I had gotten down to 16:56.  It was going to take a long time to get down to 15:00 at this rate!  However, I had this amazing swim analysis done and just tweaking my stroke a little bit has given me so much more speed!  I tested my 700 again and it was at 15:38!  I'll get there soon enough.

Not a very inspirational workout, but a step in the right direction, even as small as it is.

  1. Sandra, I'm totally interested in where you got your swim analysis done?? I haven't had one since I swam in hs and I feel like it would really help me reach my goal this year. Always inspired by you two!
