Overcoming the Obstacles (W3 2018)

I have done 3 full marathons, 50+ half marathons, a host of 10ks and 5ks and triathlons and 1 Half Ironman.  The double digit runs still haunt me, even though I have done them countless times. They get in my head and I remember them going badly or the pure drudgery of them and I dread them.  But there was a time where I was kicking out 10+ mile runs like they were jogs in the park.  And they felt like that too.  I'm trying to get back to that spot and it's hard because I'm older and fatter and not as driven as I use to be.  Two of those things can be improved upon and age is only a number, so I'm working hard to get there.  But we all have to start somewhere and Saturday is where I started.

It hasn't really snowed here the entire winter.  A few dustings here and there, but nothing substantial, so naturally it would dump on Friday night just in time to do my first double digit run in almost a year.  I was undeterred though.  I have goals, people!

I left to meet my friend and realized very quickly that I did not have on a thick enough jacket, so I turned around and went home to get one.  I hate being cold.  I would much rather be too hot than too cold.  Finally, after figuring out a few more wardrobe issues, we were on our way.  It's the longest I have run in our new county and I was curious to see how the route would be.  Definitely not as beautiful as 10 miles out in the country, but the majority of it was on a paved trail, so we didn't have to dodge cars.  That's a bonus.

The wind howled and the snow bit our faces, but we trudged on.  We had on microspikes for the snow and they came in handy a few times.  I can't say it was a great run.  It was slow, but we did it.  10 miles in the snow!  I realize now why we've never signed up for Ogden before.

I have run in worse conditions.  I have run faster in worse conditions.  But it's a little win to be out there again, doing it again, and feeling good about where I am at.  Only way is up from here.
