The Beginning

A number of years ago a man and woman fell in love...and another man and woman fell in love.

They both had some kids...

Two of those kids grew up and met...

The details really aren't that important to the story.

And that is how Sandra and Hillary became Sandra and Hillary.  It's funny.  You find and meet people all the time and sometimes they stick around for a few years and sometimes they stick around forever.  And whatever it is that makes you click can't ever really be pinpointed.  It's just there.  But Sandra and Hillary were the best training partners.  They knew how to push each other, they knew when to back off.  They were just as happy in complete silence as they were in deep conversation. It was an athlete's match made in heaven.

It really first started with running, and then kinda segued into triathlons.   And (fast-forwarding through all the nitty gritty stuff) five years ago, after a semi-thought out decision to do a Half Ironman (which they did!), Sandra and Hillary decided they'd do a full Ironman.

A full Ironman!  2.4 miles swimming, 112 miles biking, and 26.2 miles running.

They had a target date and since it was so far away, they happily went about their lives.

Now, the clock is ticking and that target date is quickly approaching.  It's time to get serious.  And by serious, we mean lose that extra weight, get our training up to speed, figure out how to manage a household (Hillary has six (6!!!) kids.  Sandra has three) while also devoting 20+ hours a week to the biggest endeavor of our lives and how to actually do this event without croaking.  Because there's no glory in that.

There's only one small wrench in everything and that is that Sandra moved 56 miles away last year and now this heavenly match is not so heavenly.  It has been a struggle for both to adjust to this new way of training.  But, we'll make it work.

That brings us to why we would start documenting our training two and a half years out from our event.  It isn't just about swimming, biking and running 140.6 miles.  That 140.6 miles is just the last miles of a very long, arduous, terrifying, exhilarating journey.  And we want to document it here. For our legions of fans.   For our daughters so they can know that their dreams aren't meant to be locked up but adjusted and melded to fit their lives.  For those who have rolled their eyes at us and mocked our methods. But also for us.  So when we look back, at the start of a new challenge, we can say "That's how we did it!"

Baby steps to the finish line.  You'll read that a lot here.  It's our mantra.  It means that when things look overwhelming (and they do from this vantage point.  Believe me!) just take another step forward and another and another. And before long, you'll see the finish line (and if the race organizers are smart, you won't see that finish line until it's time to cross it.  Not every time you have to go around a loop. Or at the halfway mark) and you will have made it with your little baby steps

We're not going to win anything.  We're not going to go to Kona.  We're not going to be featured in a magazine or on the news.  We really are just doing this for us.  And for that awesome finish line photo that will be proudly displayed in our front rooms.
Thanks for joining us!
